#1 Effective Communication Skills

What I anticipate from ES2007S
By the looks of it, it's indeed a very comprehensive course packed with several topics which give us insight not only into our future professional lives but also shed light on the preparatory steps prior to it. I think an overview of this course would be done best by splitting it up into 4 sub-categories:
  1. Fundamentals of Communication
This section lays down the scaffolding of the entire course. We'll learn about the breakdown on what communication really is, the importance of listening, story-telling and questioning effectively, how to facilitate intercultural communication, all about nonverbal communication and how to foster interpersonal communication.
  2. Position Search
This section deals with the job-searching and job interview process with regards to the actual scenarios and the necessary preparations in advance. We'll learn about how to search for a suitable job, how to write effective resume and cover letters, how to prepare for and perform at job interviews and also about effective personal branding.
  3. Project Communication
This section concerns skills related to project work. We'll learn about how to write a good proposal, the necessary steps to conduct effective meetings, the employment of collaborative work platforms, data analysis and results presentation skills and how to give an effective oral presentation.
  4. Written Communication
This section covers important skills that can be applied in our written interaction with others in the workplace. We'll learn about the 7 C's in writing, how to produce effective business letters, e-mails and other business writings and how to construct bad and good news messages.
That's a lot of ground to cover!!! It's amazing how many skills we can expect to take away from this course, all of which are sure to be relevant not only in our future careers but are also applicable to our personal interaction with people outside the workplace.

Why effective communication skills are important for me
In my opinion, one who has effective communication skills has the ability to express one’s thoughts and articulate one’s ideas in a manner that is easily understood by the receiving party while remaining appropriate and sensitive. My personal contention is that the main importance of effective communication lies in its fulfillment of a fundamentally human desire to express ourselves and be understood, be it in a professional or personal context.  I hope to experience more often that boost in self-confidence when people acknowledge that they have grasped the message that I had hoped to convey from the first go.  From a social point of view, I believe such skills are important as they will help me expand my social network by forging better relations with people comfortably, ranging from acquaintances to close friends. Not only will widespread social connections undoubtedly come in handy in my career but getting to know people from varied walks of life would also be value-adding, perhaps even exciting, to my life in general.  In terms of career life, equipping myself with effective communication skills is vital to ensure that I am in the best position to clinch my desired job and upon employment, maximize my value to my organization by cooperating and interacting well with both my colleagues and clients. This includes being able to pitch an idea or verbalize my opinions clearly in an oral presentation or a staff meeting. Let's not forget that effective communication does not only involve self-initiated interactions. I feel that effective communication is essential also because it will allow me to internalize information relayed by others, both explicit and implicit, which depending on context, can help me to acquire knowledge, strengthen relationships or align my job performance with my organization’s objectives.

  1. Hi Ariel,

I think you have raised valid points about the importance of effective communication. Indeed, effective communication is essential in all areas, not just in our career.

However, it may help a lot if you organise the second part of your post into paragraphs for easier reading. A large chunk of words in a single paragraph might seem intimidating to some readers (like me). The first part of your post takes up too much of your word count too.

Let's work hard towards effective communication!:)

    Happy cny!

    1. Hey Eileen,

it's Ariele btw lol. thanks for taking the time to comment on my post! yes i do realise i can get a little chunky when it comes to paragraphing. point taken!

oh the first part of the post is not under the 'word limit'. i just took it a little too literally when the instructions said 'survey the topics to be covered' *facepalm* and since i already went through the trouble to type it out, i just decided to let it have its airtime. so no worries, i made sure the second part which is the actual part was within word limits.

and happy cny to you too! i spent my whole day on a lab report.

  2. Hi Ariele, I find myself agreeing with your post. Effective communication is indeed important for one's personal or public social circle, to gain a foothold in one's career. Communication is the key to help one convey his or her message to the receiving end. Indeed it helps to build and stabilize relationships because with effective communication one can understand what you are trying to say and thus encourages a healthy conversation or helps develop a good impression. I enjoyed reading your post. Thank you Ariele.

  3. Haha yeah, you've exceeded the word count! You should have put a disclaimer or something :p Nah just fooling around.

Well, I think the way you interpreted the topic was really wholesome. You managed to condense a broad category into a concise, albeit long, paragraph, in addition to dissecting the topic into specific sub-categories. Kudos to you mate! Loved the approach <3

& you'd need more than just communication skills to start networking. Keep it up though! On trying to widen your social network (:

*Why has your skin turned orange/yellow/yolk!? Haha, see you tmr!

  4. Thanks, Arielle, for this well crafted post. I appreciate the fine summary of the course sections in the initial part of your response and, in the second portion, your opinion on how the social aspect of communication will prove so vital for you, both in work and outside of it.

As your readers mention, you've exceeded the specified word limit, but I can see the logic of your exposition and, as I invariably mention, if a student's post entertains me, I'm not so attached to word limits. That's especially true here since your interpretation of the assignment included two obvious sections: the "survey" in very fine form and the more personal statement on your needs.

In any case, this is a job well done.

  5. Hi, Ariele!

I cannot help but to agree with what you said! It is indeed fulfilling for me when I'm able to express myself accordingly and to have the other party understanding my ideas completely. Misunderstandings often happen when our intentions are not conveyed rightly, and it is even harder for us to correct these misunderstandings because opinions have already been formed. Therefore, I believe that it is really important that our first step is rightly placed.

And I really like how you summarized the entire course into the 4 sub sections. Yup, there's a lot to learn in this course, but you know what, I can't wait to start learning (kinda weird) because I know whatever we learn will be useful and it'll help us to communicate even better.
